An agreement between leading steel companies sets forth general parameters for a possible remedy in the Bush Administration's Section 201 investigation on steel imports, but companies have not put forward a specific proposal on the most contentious issue of government assistance for companies' legacy costs.
European Union trade commissioner Pascal Lamy today (Jan. 25) again urged the U.S. not to impose any unilateral restraints on steel imports by warning that such a move would have “serious consequences” not only from the EU but from other trading partners.
Following a meeting with his European counterpart, U.S. Trade Representative Robert Zoellick today (Jan. 25) announced the U.S. would work to comply with a World Trade Organization ruling that a U.S. tax scheme constitutes a prohibited export subsidy.
