In its April 1 formal notice to Congress, the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative identified six U.S. laws that need to be changed to implement the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), but only one breaks new ground from the requirements posed by previous free trade agreements.
New Zealand Prime Minister John Key today signaled that his country is not open to changing the terms of the Trans-Pacific Partnership before it enters into force but that tweaks to the deal could occur as additional countries join in the future. He also warned that failure to bring the TPP into force would bolster the Chinese-led effort to conclude the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP).
