Canada pledged in a Jan. 7 letter exchange with the United States not to request a World Trade Organization panel in its dispute over the U.S. country-of-origin labeling (COOL) law until the U.S. final rule has been in place for eight months. The two countries also pledged to seek a “mutually agreed solution” to the fight after the end of the eight-month period.

The chairman of the agriculture committee in the Canadian Parliament House of Commons has told a key United States congressman that Canada will proceed to a dispute settlement panel in the World Trade Organization on the U.S. country-of-origin labeling (COOL) law and rule unless there can be a compromise.
