Canadian mayors on June 6 passed a non-binding resolution to support Canadian municipalities who adopt procurement policies for local infrastructure projects that favor companies in countries who "do not impose trade restrictions against goods and materials manufactured in Canada," in response to the "Buy American" rules in President Obama's stimulus package.

The U.S. government this week argued in formal legal proceedings under the Softwood Lumber Agreement (SLA) that Canada's offer of a lump sum payment to compensate the United States for a breach of the terms of the SLA is insufficient to lead the U.S. to lift its punitive sanctions on Canadian lumber imports.

Canadian Minister of Industry Tony Clement this week painted "Buy America" provisions as "protectionist measures" that could harm the trade relationship between the U.S. and Canada and planned to press members of Congress and U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke to keep such provisions out of pending and future legislation.
