A review of export control policy announced on Aug. 13 by the White House will involve a wide range of administration officials, including top officials from the White House, Defense Department, State Department and Commerce Department, according to a senior administration official.

The Commerce Department this week issued a proposed rule expanding export controls on anti-crime technology in several areas, the first of a multi-stage process of reviewing the crime technology-related portion of the Commerce Control List. The rule contains "relatively simple" changes, while later stages will implement "more complex" matters, according to background information in the rule.

Four months after President Barack Obama nominated Francisco Sanchez to be undersecretary of Commerce for international trade, the Senate Finance Committee has yet to schedule a hearing and says it has not yet completed its vetting process of the nominee. Sources speculated the slow progress on Sanchez in the committee may be related to an ongoing federal loan investigation.
