Two senators with a history of advocating strong action on currency yesterday (Nov. 19) stepped up pressure on the Commerce Department to take a definitive stance on China's currency undervaluation in countervailing duty cases, charging that it has repeatedly avoided tackling the issue in CVD petitions.

Undersecretary of Commerce for export administration-nominee Eric Hirschhorn told the Senate Banking Committee during his confirmation hearing yesterday (Nov. 5) that he sees no conflict between his past work as an advocate for less restrictive export controls and carrying out the duties of his new position if confirmed.

Last week marked the deadline for members of the advisory committees to notify the Commerce Department and the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative if they are federally registered lobbyists and therefore banned from membership because of a White House guideline issued in September.
