The Commerce Department late last week eased export controls on a set of thermal imaging cameras with civil night vision uses such as firefighting, as part of a broader rule that also tightened controls on higher-end thermal imaging cameras, unembedded camera cores and thermal imaging cameras that are part of a munitions item.

The Office of Government Ethics this week took a step toward congressional consideration of two nominations put forward by President Barack Obama by releasing the financial disclosure forms for Rep. Ellen Tauscher (D-CA), who is nominated to be the State Department undersecretary of state for arms control and international security, and Frank Sanchez, who is nominated to be the Commerce Department undersecretary for international trade.

President Barack Obama's 2010 fiscal year budget proposal calls for a budget increase of roughly $1 million -- or 2.2 percent over its current funding -- for the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, one third of which is slated to go to increase staffing at USTR's Beijing office.
