Undersecretary of Commerce for International Trade Christopher Padilla today (Nov. 13) warned against enactment of legislation aimed at punishing China for the low value of the yuan, as part of 10 recommendations he presented for the incoming Obama administration. Padilla further warned that getting “bogged down” in a China currency debate or discussion of labor and environmental provisions of the North American Free Trade Agreement would not appease hard-core opponents of trade and would threaten the U.S. economic position, especially in Asia.

Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez said yesterday (Oct. 7) he expects the Brazilian side to press for a removal of U.S. tariffs on imported ethanol in bilateral meetings he will attend in Brazil this week. Though he endorsed the tariffs' removal, he said he did not see their repeal in the near future because it would require congressional action.
