House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Charles Rangel (D-NY) this week said that Colombia could ask for U.S. assistance to help it bring criminals to justice who murder labor leaders as a way of more effectively addressing the key outstanding issue that stands in the way of congressional consideration of a free trade agreement with the United States.

House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Charles Rangel (D-NY) yesterday (May 5) signaled that he would not immediately proceed to a vote on the Panama-U.S. free trade agreement once the Obama administration has resolved outstanding labor and tax issues with the Panamanian government.

Deputy U.S. Trade Representative-nominee Demetrios Marantis told Sen. Charles Grassley (R-IA) in written answers made public today (May 5) that he would consider the ideas developed by Grassley and other interested parties to ensure that preference program benefits are concentrated on the world's poorest countries. Marantis seemed cool to limiting U.S. programs to only those countries, however.
