The Senate Finance Committee today (March 12) approved former Dallas mayor Ron Kirk to be United States Trade Representative by a voice vote. Kirk's nomination will now head to the full Senate for consideration.

Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) this week said the Obama administration "is interested in moving forward" with a bill he introduced last week that would create Reconstruction Opportunity Zones (ROZs) in Afghanistan and Pakistan. The bill would allow non-sensitive exports from the zones to enter the U.S. duty-free.

Sander Levin (D-MI), chairman of the House Ways and Means trade subcommittee, said today (March 11) that all three pending free trade agreements, including the Panama FTA that is widely seen as the least controversial, involve problems that need to be resolved before Congress can approve them.
