Despite a rekindled interest on Capitol Hill in the Havana Club rum dispute, business sources on both sides of the debate signaled there will not likely be a major push for this Congress to pass legislation that would bring the U.S. into compliance with a related World Trade Organization ruling that faulted a provision of U.S. law known as Section 211.

The European Union and Cuba on Monday (Jan. 25) welcomed the U.S. government's move earlier this month to renew the trademark for Havana Club for a Cuban state-owned firm instead of U.S.-based Bacardi, but said it was insufficient to resolve a longstanding World Trade Organization dispute linked to the trademark fight.

President Obama on Tuesday night (Jan. 12) called on Congress to lift the U.S. trade embargo on Cuba, saying that doing so would contribute to a more resourceful foreign policy strategy and advance U.S. leadership in the Western Hemisphere.

NAIROBI, Kenya – World Trade Organization members are tentatively slated to hold an informal heads of delegation meeting at 11 a.m. local time on Saturday (Dec. 19), but trade officials said it remains unclear whether negotiators will be able to produce a revised text of the ministerial package before then based on discussions that took place overnight between the G-5 group of major members.
