The Obama administration is beginning to ramp up its efforts to reauthorize the Export-Import Bank with the president personally getting involved this week in the fight for the institution whose charter expired at the end of the day Tuesday (June 30) for the first time in its 81-year history.

Heritage Action for America, a prominent conservative advocacy group, on Wednesday (June 10) urged members of the House of Representatives to vote "no" on the pending Trade Promotion Authority (TPA) bill because it includes a reauthorization of the Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) program, and because TPA passage has become linked to renewal of the Export-Import Bank.

Senate Banking Committee Chairman Richard Shelby (R-AL) charged on Tuesday (June 2) that the inability of the Export-Import Bank to adopt the major reforms recommended by the Government Accountability Office and its own inspector general created doubts as to whether Ex-Im's charter should be extended on a long-term basis.
