U.S. business associations have backed off from their demand last year that the Obama administration designate India as the most egregious violator of intellectual property rights (IPR) in their filings under the Special 301 provision of U.S. trade law, even though India's applicable laws and policies have not fundamentally changed.

A compromise President Obama and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced last weekend could provide an avenue for U.S. builders and suppliers of civilian nuclear power plants to move forward with long-stalled projects in India. The companies have held off on the projects because of an Indian law that exposes equipment suppliers to unlimited liability claims in the event of an accident.
