U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack last week urged Japanese Agriculture Minister Hirotaka Akamatsu to review Japan's import requirements for U.S. beef which are more restrictive than prevailing international standards in the World Animal Health Organization (OIE).

Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) urged President Barack Obama in a Sept. 18 letter to speak to Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama and South Korean President Lee Myung-Bak at the G20 summit this week about the fact that their countries have instituted "Cash for Clunkers" programs that essentially limit rebates to purchases of their domestically produced cars.
