A “fundamental gap in expectations” exists between developed countries such as the United States that view sectoral-tariff cutting initiatives as critical to reaching a Doha round deal on non-agricultural market access negotiations (NAMA) and large developing countries that do not see sectorals as central to a deal, according to World Trade Organization Director-General Pascal Lamy.

Three days of detailed, high-level bilateral talks held in Geneva last week between the United States and China on market access for industrial goods and services helped to build momentum toward concluding the Doha round of global trade talks, according to Chinese officials. But they noted that China continued to resist U.S. demands for more market access in these two key areas.
