U.S. agri-food companies and trade associations have won the backing of a key congressional ally in a new effort to change the law governing country-of-origin labeling (COOL) for meat through the farm bill conference, which they argue is necessary to avoid a “devastating” trade spat with Canada and Mexico.

China has committed to reduce by around 30 percent its list of 148 “sensitive” items for which it is seeking exclusions or longer tariff phase-out periods from an expanded Information Technology Agreement (ITA), and has agreed to negotiate on items that are a priority for U.S. industry, according to a trade official.
