President Barack Obama's nominee for undersecretary of state for arms control and nonproliferation, Rep. Ellen Tauscher (D-CA), this week said she would consider easing export controls on commercial communication satellites by moving them from State Department control to the Commerce Control List (CCL), provided this would be consistent with U.S. “foreign policy and national security objectives.”

The new investment policy subcommittee of the State Department's Advisory Committee on International Economic Policy (ACIEP) will hold its first meeting June 8. The subcommittee has been formed to examine possible changes to the U.S. model Bilateral Investment Treaty (BIT) and to investment chapters in U.S. free trade agreements.

Andrew Shapiro, the Obama administration's nominee to head the State Department's Bureau of Political-Military Affairs, this week pledged to work with the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on the panel's outstanding issues with the Defense Trade Cooperation Treaties (DTCTs) with the United Kingdom and Australia.
