The Office of Government Ethics (OGE) on May 15 took a step toward congressional consideration of two nominations put forward by President Barack Obama by releasing the financial disclosure forms for Rep. Ellen Tauscher (D-CA), who is nominated to be the State Department undersecretary of state for arms control and international security, and Frank Sanchez, who is nominated to be the Commerce Department undersecretary for international trade.

The State Department has created a panel to conduct a formal review of investment provisions in free trade agreements and the U.S. model bilateral investment treaty (BIT), whose recommendations will feed into an interagency review of investment issues conducted by the Obama administration.

The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, the State Department and the Labor Department will likely be involved in efforts on the U.S. side to devise benchmarks for progress that Colombia must make to strengthen labor rights and curb violence against labor leaders, a process meant to lead to congressional approval of the U.S.-Colombia free trade agreement, according to informed sources.
