India halted a May 10 meeting of the World Trade Organization's General Council by refusing to agree to the proposed agenda because it included an item on “trade and investment facilitation,” which India claims is outside of the scope of the WTO, according to Geneva sources.
The World Trade Organization's negotiating tables are bereft of textual proposals despite calls for concrete offers, as members have been unable to coalesce around specific outcomes for the December ministerial in Buenos Aires.
As of Thursday (Dec. 3), negotiations at the World Trade Organization on an export competition agreement and whether the Doha round should be reaffirmed in a ministerial declaration have yet to be taken up directly by WTO ambassadors, despite less than two weeks remaining before the Dec. 15-18 ministerial conference in Nairobi, Kenya.
The World Trade Organization has delayed a previously scheduled July 24 meeting of the Trade Negotiations Committee (TNC) by one week until July 31, giving WTO members more time to strike a last-minute deal on a work program to complete the Doha round, even though chances for a breakthrough appear slim at best.
