U.S. Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner this week floated a proposal to his colleagues in the G-20 group, arguing that G-20 central bank governors meeting this week should commit to undertake policies that are "consistent with reducing external imbalances" below a specified share of gross domestic product (GDP) over the next few years.

The Treasury Department announced today (Oct. 15) that it is delaying its semiannual report on exchange rate policies in order to press China on the value of its currency at next month's G-20 meeting. The announcement states that Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner recognizes that the appreciation of China's currency accelerated in September.
