The Senate on Thursday (Feb. 11) approved the nominations of four assistant secretaries of Commerce, including two officials at the Commerce Department's Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS). The approval by unanimous consent of 27 administration nominees also included the approval of a new assistant secretary of the Treasury, according to an unofficial record of floor action.

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner today (Feb. 3) testified to the House Ways and Means Committee that passing the pending free trade agreements with South Korea, Panama and Colombia is a part of President Obama's plan to double U.S. export in five years as is the effort to reach a Doha round deal.

Sen. Jon Kyl (R-AZ) has placed a hold on the nomination of Lael Brainard to be the next under secretary for international affairs at the Treasury Department and on other Treasury nominees over the administration's delay in issuing implementing regulations for the 2006 Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA), according to informed sources.

At press time on Dec. 23, the Senate Finance Committee was poised to vote on the nomination of several key trade officials, but sources said full Senate consideration was unlikely before the holiday recess because of the continuing debate on health care reform. The final vote for that health care bill was expected at 8 am on Dec. 24 and the Senate was expected to adjourn immediately after the vote.

The Senate Finance Committee will hold a hearing today (Nov. 20) to consider the nomination of Lael Brainard to be undersecretary of Treasury for international affairs after committee staff completed a review of certain tax issues that had delayed her nomination.
