The Obama administration today (June 13) announced that Colombia has fulfilled a second set of commitments to improve labor rights under a bilateral labor action plan two days ahead of schedule, clearing a critical hurdle for consideration by the U.S. Congress of the U.S.-Colombia free trade agreement later this summer.

Rep. Kevin Brady (R-TX), who heads up the House Ways and Means Committee's trade subcommittee, said Monday (May 23) that he would like the committee to hold “mock markups” for the Colombia, South Korea, and Panama trade deals before mid-June so that Congress can move ahead with formal consideration of the trade deals soon after that.

The head of the nation's largest umbrella labor union late last week strongly criticized President Barack Obama for supporting the pending U.S.-Colombia free trade agreement and signaled that it could damage the long-standing relationship between Democrats and organized labor in advance of the 2012 elections.
