The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has notified other business groups that it is organizing a rally and congressional visits to support pending free trade agreements with South Korea, Colombia and Panama on May 26, the same day that the Senate Finance Committee is tentatively scheduled to hold a hearing on the Korea-U.S. FTA (KORUS), sources said.

The Colombian government has hired two U.S. lobbying firms to help ensure passage of the U.S.-Colombia free trade agreement, which is expected to come up before Congress for a vote this summer, sources said. One source said the two firms were hired roughly one month ago, and are the only firms the Colombian government has hired thus far.

Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus (D-MT) said yesterday (May 11) he expects the Obama administration to formally submit the U.S.-Colombia free trade agreement to Congress for a vote after June 15, when Colombia is due to fulfill a second set commitments under a bilateral labor action plan.

In the wake of the administration announcement yesterday (May 4) that it is ready to begin technical talks on the three pending trade deals with South Korea, Colombia and Panama, the Finance Committee is scheduling separate hearings for all of those trade deals by the end of the month, sources said.

The Obama administration today (May 4) announced that it is ready to begin technical talks with congressional trade committees on the draft implementing bills for the three pending free trade agreements, including the U.S.-Colombia free trade agreement. It had already made a similar announcement regarding trade deals with South Korea and Panama, but not for the Colombia deal.
