Top trade officials from the United States and South Korea will meet in Washington next week for the first Joint Committee meeting under the U.S-Korea free trade agreement, a spokeswoman for the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative said yesterday (May 9).

In an unexpected turn, South Korea's ruling political party held on to a majority of its seats in National Assembly general elections this week, all but burying the possibility that opposition lawmakers will be able to renegotiate or else scrap the Korea-U.S. free trade agreement, as they had earlier threatened to do if they assumed control.

As the Korea-U.S. free trade agreement enters into force today (March 15), a senior U.S. trade official said there are no firm timelines yet by which the U.S. will seek to address outstanding issues with Korea over pharmaceutical reimbursement rates and increased market access for beef.
