The House Rules Committee today (Oct. 6) passed a single closed rule governing floor consideration of the free trade agreements with Colombia, South Korea and Panama and a bill that will renew the Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) and Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) programs, according to a committee announcement.

Ways and Means Committee Chairman Dave Camp (R-MI) said today (Oct. 5) that he believed that the House would likely approve three pending free trade agreement next week, and said he was hopeful that the Senate would also approve the U.S.-Korea FTA before the Oct. 13 state visit of South Korean President Lee Myung-bak.

The White House submitted the three pending free trade agreements to Congress based on assurances by House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) that the House would also pass an extension of the Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) program quickly, and then backed up that promise with action in the House Rules Committee, senior administration officials said in a press conference.

That rule will now be considered on the House floor, before the House votes on the TAA/GSP bill itself.
