A Democratic Senate aide and an administration official today (July 27) disputed the assertion offered this morning by Ways and Means Committee Chairman Dave Camp (R-MI) that House and Senate leaders have agreed on a deal on how to move forward the pending free trade agreements in conjunction with Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA).

U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk said today (July 26) that the administration has consulted with congressional leadership on both sides of the aisle and has reached a "framework" agreement with Congress that will allow Congress to renew Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) and the pending free trade agreements in September.

Rob Portman (R-OH) today (July 22) said he wants the White House to submit the pending free trade agreements to Congress before the Senate votes on renewing Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA), although he said he would be willing to vote in favor of TAA renewal before the Senate acts on the trade deals.

While the announcement last night (July 20) by Sen. Rob Portman (R-OH) that 12 Republican senators are willing to support a standalone Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) bill on the Senate floor is a "welcome development," it is not enough for the administration to send up the pending free trade agreements to Congress.
