U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk today (July 20) said the Obama administration is continuing to work with congressional leaders to find a way forward for passing the three pending free trade agreements along with Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA), but gave no timeline for when the administration would submit the FTAs to Congress.

The White House has decided to hold off on sending the three pending free trade agreements to Congress until the fall, according to private-sector sources. That decision comes less than one week after White House Chief of Staff Bill Daley stressed the importance of acting on the trade deals before the August recess (Inside U.S. Trade, July 15).

Congressional aides and business lobbyists this week doubted that the White House will submit the three pending free trade agreements to Congress for a vote prior to the August recess due to the continued inability of the parties involved to reach a deal on Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) and the intense focus on the debt ceiling talks.
