Nine months after Peru missed a deadline to comply with its obligations under the forestry annex of the U.S.-Peru free trade agreement, the U.S. has not established a concrete timeline for Peru to come into full compliance with these provisions and has not laid out specific consequences of its continued failure to do so, according to a U.S. trade official.

Peru's Congress sometime around April will pass a forestry law that partially aims to bring Peru into compliance with the environmental provisions of the U.S.-Peru free trade agreement, according to the U.S. ambassador to Peru.

An official in the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) who has played a key role in U.S. efforts to ensure Peru's compliance with the forestry annex of the U.S.-Peru free trade agreement has left that position. Mara Burr has assumed a post in USTR's Central and South Asian Affairs office.

Nineteen U.S. and Peruvian environmental groups last month called on their two governments to establish a plan and a new time frame for Peru to meet its commitments under the forestry annex of the U.S.-Peru free trade agreement after Peru missed an Aug. 1 deadline to fully implement those commitments.
