Key members of Congress, advocates, and industry representatives have begun discussions to modernize the way the Agriculture Department ensures a safe supply of meat, poultry and egg products, but legislation is unlikely this year according to sources, since USDA reform is considered less vital than reforming the troubled Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack has endorsed the development of a strategy facilitating the export of genetically engineered (GE) agriculture commodities and said a framework for such a strategy will be ready by August this year, according to a Jan. 27 letter included in a report by the USDA Office of Inspector General (OIG).
