U.S. Trade Representative nominee Ron Kirk told his Senate Finance Committee confirmation hearing today (March 9) that the U.S.-South Korea free trade agreement is unacceptable as negotiated to the Obama administration and that the administration is prepared to walk away from the deal if it cannot be improved.
The fact that U.S. Trade Representative nominee Ron Kirk has agreed to pay roughly $10,000 in back taxes due to errors revealed through a vetting process performed by the Senate Finance Committee is unlikely to pose a significant problem to Kirk's nomination, observers on Capitol Hill said today (March 2).
President Obama's 2009 trade agenda, delivered to Congress last week and released publicly today (March 2), says that the administration hopes to move the U.S.-Panama free trade agreement first and is also working with Congress to move the U.S.-Colombia and U.S.-South Korea trade deals through an action plan.
